"Jack Rich Honored With Dinner Party
Jack Rich, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Rich, Sr., was honored with a surprise dinner party at his home on the Wednesday preceding Thanksgiving. The occasion was Jack's 17th birthday, and a group of his school friends were invited to help him celebrate the occasion.
The Thanksgiving motif was carried out in the dining table decoration which featured an attractive centerpiece of deep red chrysanthemums flaanked by lighted red candles. Clever turkeys fashioned from apples served as place cards, and unusual china with a turkey design was used.
Covers were laid for Jackie Geeslin, Susan Bridges, Katherine Brownlee of Gainsville, Fla., Susan Brown, Betty Jo Smith, Shug Griffin, Graham Holt, Marl Ward, Billy Reynolds, Tom McLeod, Joel Hughes, and the honoree. After dinner the young people attended the Junior Class Dance at the Youth Center." |

Trip for Graduation
First stop: Tarboro, N.C., in Anne Jenkens' wedding, spent 5 days there
After leaving Tarboro, we went to Little Creek, N.C. Took a ferry over to Cape Charles, VA, then went up the cape to Delaware. Spent the night at Accomac, VA. Next day had a very interesting trip through Del. and Penn. Arrived in Lincoln Park, Penn June 15th 1953. Took several trips sightseeing up in the Penn. Dutch Settlement also went on a nice picnic party and met lots of nice young people.
When we left Penn for New York, it was a wonderful drive through the Holland Tunnel into N.Y., straight up Broadway to the Astor Hotel. After getting settled, we started right out sightseeing. First we took a look at Times Square, the busiest spot in the world, then over to Rockefeller Center into Radio Center Music Hall. Saw "Wonderful When Wet" in the screen and the "Rockettes" on the stage. After, we went to "Jack Dempseys" for our dinner. Steak was grand. But before we had dinner we went to St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Ave. After dinner we went to see "Guys and Dolls," a grand musical. |

"Terrace dance honors bridal pair, Miss Barefield & Mr. Rich:
A lovely terrace dance Saturday night, October 22, honored Miss Becky Barefield and Mr. Jack Rich, both of Atlanta, whose marriage will be an event of Saturday in Atlanta.
The party was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rich, Jr. Hosts for the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. Billy Reynolds, Mr. and Mrs. James Partee and Mr. and Mrs. Rich.
Original and clever Hallowe'en decorations in the home and on lantern-lighted terrace were featured. On each side of the front door stood a tall brass candlestick with candles, and lighted pumpkins. Arrangements of orange and yellow zinnias and hawthorne berries continued the color scheme at focal points in the home. The dining table was overlaid with a yellow cloth with dark green runner and was appointed with four brass candlesticks holding large green candles. A harvest arrangement centered the table. Assortments of hors d'oeuvres were served from a tall, tiered wooden tray in the den and from the buffet in the dining room.
As the guests arrived they were given Hallowe'en masks. On the terrace where dancing was enjoyed, the Hallowe'en motif also prevailed, complete with huge spiderwebs and monster spiders. Jack-o'-lanterns and lantern standards lighted the terrace area and yard. Punch was served from a huge black iron pot placed in banks of flame-colored hawthorne berries. The table held wrought iron candlesticks, with burning orange candles, and a black ceramic cat.
Friends of the future bride and groom composed the guest list, including the following from out of town: Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Strong [Straughan], Atlanta, Mr. Herb Heiserer, Dallas, Texas, Miss Pam Horner, San Francisco, California, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Haddock, Damascus, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Brockett, Atlanta, and Mr. and Mrs. Graham Holt, Tallahassee, Florida." |

"Westwood subdivision developers (l to r) Harry Friedman, Don and Sarah Lowell, and contractor Jack Rich (far right) watch as Bainbridge mayor Bill Reynolds clips the ribbon to officially open the city's newest subdivision development. Located off Bethel Road, the subdivision has space for 43 homes in the first phase of construction and 50 in the second phase. All paved streets, city water and total electric homes are features of the area. Homes on display constructed by Rich include about 1200 heated square feet and carports or garages. Friedman said that he wanted to bring a reasonably priced home to Bainbridge to enable younger couples to be able to afford housing. The homes are priced in the $30-40,000 range. Mayor Reynolds welcomed the new development and noted that the city was delighted to see new subdivisions developed. He added that the new development would help increase property values in the Bethel Road area. The ribbon cutting was Thursday, and developer plans a gala open house this weekend." |

"Touch of Las Vegas comes to town
Members of Springtime Tallahassee went for broke Friday night. Their final wingding of the year was a casino party at the luxurious new Falls Chase Clubhouse on Buck Lake Road. Cocktails and a buffet dinner were served on the patio, shaded by giant oak trees, and then guests settled down to an evening of chance - with real Las Vegas equipment and play money. There was an uptown group of croupiers - including at least one judge, Ben Willis, and other upright types like former Springtime president and physician Al McCully; lawyer Tom Woods; insurance executive Jim Woods; developer Bob Fewox and his son Dave, a Maclay student; developer Jack Rich, president of State Securities Corp.; Ken Fuqua; and businessmen Gus Schrowang and Charlie Hill. Money was in good hands too - those of Vernon and Joe Sanders, both certified public accountants.
...
Before the roulette and black jack tables opened, Sister Fay gave palm readings. Kathi Chenoweth and Betty McCord aren't telling what their fortunes are! Gary Carroll did caricatures of guests, with especially good likenesses of Lee Sims and Becky Rich.

"Springtime Krewe transforms armory for Twelfth Night Ball
It never fails, Springtime Tallahassee's first gala of the year invariably falls on a brisk, wintery night. The ninth annual Twelfth Night Ball Jan. 15 was no exception, but the McMillan National Guard Armory was warm with hospitality.
That's no small feat, either. It may be appropriate to celebrate Gen. Jackson's candle-lighting ceremony in an armory, but it does challenge Springtime Tallahassee krewe members to help guests forget that it's a big, drafty barn of a building. The American Territorial Krewe, led by Doug Maddox and his wife, Delores, managed just that, however, with their Old New Orleans-type party, a theme appropriate for commemorating Andrew Jackson's victory over the British at the Battle of New Orleans. Gaily-painted panels, depicting places like Brennan's and Cafe du Monde, lined the entry.
Krewe members created a Mardi Gras atmosphere with table centerpieces of multi-colored harlequin-shaped masks accented with camellias and azaleas. Four large masks, fashioned of ivy and asparagus fern intertwined...
Staff members honored David Avant the night before the Twelfth Night Ball at a dinner party given at the lakeside home of Becky and Jack Rich. Hosts with the Riches were Ken and Carolyn Fuqua, Bill and Brenda Dyer, Jimmy and Kittie Carter and Vern and Sandy Sanders." |

"Pipeline plans trouble environmentalists
The maps are drawn and environmentalists are starting to worry. Colonial Pipeline Co. has plans to build a petroleum pipeline within a mile of Lake Iamonia, in north Leon County, and two sinkholes near the Jefferson County border in Leon. The pipeline would cut through tree-canopied Miccosukee and Moccasin Gap roads and the Ochlockonee River in Georgia. Carole Sims, project coordinator for Colonial Pipeline in Tallahassee, said the company has chosen the best possible route for its 45-mile pipeline, which would connect a Bainbridge, Ga., gasoline-distribution center with a proposed terminal in Jefferson County.
Environmental experts disagree, citing potential damage to already fragile wetlands. And at least three accidents involving Colonial Pipeline have occurred in Georgia during the past seven years - though officials say their company's safety record is good. 'I'm not comfortable with this,' said Helge Swanson, chief planning officer for Leon County. 'Our position is that this is not the place for that type of activity.' But Leon County officials may not have a say in the matter. Colonial Pipeline's future in Leon County depends on Jefferson County commissioners, who will decide if they should give Texaco permission to build a 6.5-million-gallon gasoline terminal near Lloyd.
The Jefferson County Planning Commission is scheduled to meet Thursday to discuss Texaco's request for a zoning change on the proposed distribution site. If the planning commission recommends approval, the County Commission must still consider the request. If the project is approved, Leon County will get the petroleum pipeline. Federal law gives Colonial Pipeline the power of eminent domain, which is the right to appropriate private property for public use.
'It's a shame our future will be decided by Jefferson County,' said Cliff Thaell, president of the Council of Neighborhood Associations. 'This pipeline brings absolutely no benefits to Leon County.' Jack Rich, a Tallahassee resident whose 535-acre lot east of Bainbridge was surveyed by pipeline officials, wants the project stopped. Rich said he's not willing to give up the 35-foot easement that Colonial Pipeline needs for its project." |

"Every day's Valentine's
Ann Drew and Virginia Newman beckoned friends for cocktails and merriment at a post-Valentine's Day party at Ann's beautiful downtown home Friday night, with an invitation featuring a 'Tallulah-esque' vamp explaining, 'Dahlin', EVERY day is Valentine's Day around here!'
Steve Sternberg drew a cluster of guests around the baby grand piano for a medley of vintage tunes by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and other musical greats. Karl Mark's catered scrumptious hors d'oeuvres of shrimp, pork loin, jerk chicken, tiny cucumber sandwiches and other goodies - served with elegant flair on a dining room table fragrant with dozens of deep red roses.
It was a busy evening, with guests dropping in before or after such gala events as the musical 'Chicago' at the Civic Center and the ABC's of Pop art show, which opened Florida State University's Seven Days and Opening Nights.
Guests included...Becky and Jack Rich." |

"Official: Wal-Mart to build in Bainbridge: Big things are in the works for Bainbridge, Ga. Bob Gardner, Bainbridge's building official, confirmed Thursday that Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer Wal-Mart is planning a 186,000-square-foot store in Bainbridge. "They have submitted a schematic plan, a site layout," Gardner said. The retailer closed on the purchase of the 20.25 acres Thursday. Jack G. Rich, a retired stockbroker and Tallahassee resident, said he sold the two parcels near the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and U.S. Highway 84 to Wal-Mart, but he wouldn't disclose the purchase price. A call to Wal-Mart for details was not returned. Gardner said the retailer told city officials construction could start by the beginning of 2005, with construction taking about a year.
Fringe Benefits makes acquisition: Fringe Benefits, the Tallahassee-based third-party flexible-benefits administrative company, purchased United Benefits, a subsidiary of Brown & Brown in Daytona Beach. United Benefits is a third-party administrator for self-insured medical insurance plans. The purchase allows Fringe Benefits to expand its services into the self-insured medical plan field. As part of the acquisition, Fringe Benefits will keep United's more than 60 employees at its Daytona Beach location." |

"Now is not the time for legislators to slack off
Congress is on vacation. They're not working on the greatest economic problem of our time: energy independence. Think about it when you pay at the pump. Seventy percent of our oil comes from foreign controls and $700 billion (with a capital B) flows out of the country to pay for it each year.

"It's economics 101
There was something in the air on April 15 in front of the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee. Twenty-five-hundred (my estimate) good, clean-cut, hard-working people were there to protest unbridled spending by Congress and the mortgaging of our grandchildren's economic future.
Becky and I ran into Pat and Marl Ward at the Tea Party. Marl is a great friend and we graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1953. Marl is a good example of the kind of people that were at the Tea Party. Marl served his country in the Marines and is a very successful, self-made businessman-he didn't have one thin dime at the start. He built the Red Barn in Bainbridge with his own hands and worked other jobs to help pay for the land and buildings. Marl later moved to Tallahassee, built the Red Barn on Capital Circle, etc. He has a fine family, pays his taxes and has never asked the government for anything." |
