    • I have not been able to find a date of death for George. He was alive on 6 July 1860 in Morgan County, Tennessee for the census. The only other clue is a memorial tombstone for him at the Alexander Gilreath Cemetery in Brushy Mountain Township, Wilkes County, North Carolina, which provides a death year of 1860.

  • Notes 
    • According to the Tennessee State Archives, there were courthouse fires in Morgan County, Tennessee, in 1826, 1870, and 1904.  The wills for this county start in 1868 and probate records start in 1866.  No Gilreaths were found in the will or probate indexes.  Tax books are only available after 1881.

      Additionally the following are available at the Tennessee Archives:
      -chancery court minutes from 1865
      -county court minutes from 1848
      -circuit court minutes from 1840

      The only other hope for Gilreath records is in the deed indexes, 1818-1914.  These are available via Interlibrary Loan and I will be seeking them soon.
