"Robinson-Brewer
Of profound interest to their many friends in Wilkes county and elsewhere, was the marriage of Miss Lunda Robinson to Mr. James Oliver Brewer, which took place at 11:30 Saturday at the First Baptist Pastorium in Newton, N.C.
The simple, but impressive ceremony was spoken by Dr. Douglas of that city in the presence of only immediate relatives of the bride and groom. The bride was becomingly attired in a dress of brown crepe and satin with accessories to match. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. J. J. Robinson, of Newton, and the late J. J. Robinson, who was a prominent citizen of Brushy mountain township and well known throughout this section, and a granddaughter of Alexander Gilreath, who was a pioneer Baptist minister in Wilkes and Alexander counties. For the past year she has made her home with her uncle, Mr. M. L. Gilreath of North Wilkesboro. The groom is a native of the Dockery and Traphill community where he has been engaged..." |

Alexander Gilreath, (Jr.), son of George and Sarah A. Wallin (Wallis?) Gilreath was born about 1813 in Wilkes County N.C. He married Sarah C Parleir (Parlier-Perleir), daughter of Jonathan and Rebecca Shinn (Shin) Parleir. The date of their Wilkes County marriage bond is 27 December 1836. Sarah was born about 1816 and died 17 October 1883. The date of Alexander‘s death is not known. The last official record of him is 10 October 1891, when as a resident of Alexander County he sold 75 acres of his Wilkes County land to M.M. and Norman Davis. This deed was registered in Wilkes County 18, May 1901 (Bk 37:86-87). Alexander and Sarah are buried in the Jonathan Parleir Family Cemetery near Pores Knob in Wilkes County, the area where they lived. Their graves are marked with field rock.
Alexander Gilreath is always referred to as Alexander Gilreath, Jr., in official records. This was to separate him from his grandfather Alexander, Sr. He was a farmer and Baptist Minister. He also served as Justice of the Peace in Wilkes county and was appointed a member of the County School Committee The 1848 Tax List and the 1860 Agriculture Census of Wilkes County list him owning some 130 acres in the Upper Division of the county but records of only 87 acres of his land have been located. He received two land grants on the waters of Rocky Creek; 72 acres on 18 October 1846 (Bk Q:434) and 15 acres, 20 October 1862 (Bk Z:302).
Alexander and Sarah P Gilreath were members of Bethel Baptist Church. He joined by experience in August, 1847 and served as moderator and delegate to the Association on many occasions. He was ordained a Minister of the Gospel in May, 1855 being called as Pastor of Walnut Grove, Baptist Church of Wilkes County in August, 1854. He served as Pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church from November, 1860 to 1863 and preached at other churches in the area, including Liberty Baptist Church. He is listed as a Minister of the Gospel in the Baptist records at Wake Forest University. His address is given as Cedar Run, N.C. and he is in the records of the Alexander and Brushy Mountain Associations. |
