"Weather, Tobacco and Personal Notes from Alexander. To the Editor of The Landmark: The noted ground hog must have seen his shadow on last Thursday, for it seems that winter has set in again for another blast. The forest is blowing very politely this morning under its heavy load of ice.
The warm, damp mornings, last week brought tobacco in order so that it could be hauled and several wagons have started to market, some to Winston and others to Statesville. It seems that tobacco is bringing very good prices and most all of our tobacco raisers are trying to get their tobacco off. Some few have burned plant beds preparatory to another crop, but the weather has been very unfavorable for out door work.
Our esteemed citizens, Mr. J. E. Gilreath and his brother, Mr. Bud. Gilreath, with their families, are preparing to move to Texas. We hope they will meet with success in the Lone Star State. The health of this community has been very good all through the winter, and we hope it will remain so.

"Some Present Progress of North Wilkesboro.
North Wilkesboro might well be called the gate way between supply and demand, especially so far as lumber and other products of the forest and good wholesome produce, poultry, eggs, fruit and fat cattle. The resources of the mountain counties is unknown to the outside world but it is gradually finding this great storehouse of good things as is evidenced by the heavy and rapidly increasing traffic through North Wilkesboro. The hustle and busy activity in trade of all kinds is one thing to be seen. The smoke from the furnaces of nearly a dozen manufacturing plants is another, but the things that impresses one most is what is now going on in the way of new buildings.
First in importance is the new graded school building whose walls are rising up like a fortress or the crown of a hill in the midst of the residence section of the town overlooking the Yadkin river. This building will have every modern convenience installed and accommodate 650 or 700 children. The carpenters and brick masons are hurrying the work with speed, hoping to get the children housed within its walls in October.
Mr. M. L. Gilreath is building a new residence on the south Eastern slope of Kensington Heights." |

Gilreath Shoe Shop, owned and operated here for a number of years by Mr. M. L. Gilreath, has drastically reduced all prices on shoe repair work, and these are now in full force.
The Gilreath shop is well equipped throughout and only a short while ago a new stitcher was installed in order that better work might be turned out for all customers of the shop.
'The special prices are not in effect just on certain days,' Mr. Gilreath stated this morning, but will be given the benefit of the lowered prices any day in the week.'
If you have any shoe repair work that you need done, especially to protect your feet during this winter weather, the Gilreath shop will be pleased to have your patronage." |

- Inscription:
MARCUS L. GILREATH
APR. 11, 1864
APR. 12, 1936
[Marcus Leander and Thenia Lavenia Hendren Gilreath were originally buried at a cemetery known as "the Baptist Cemetery," which was located at the corner of 6th and J Streets in North Wilkesboro. At some point after 1945, the cemetery became unkempt and the city decided to take it over. They renamed it the North Wilkesboro City Cemetery.
After 1945, the bodies of Marcus Leander and Thenia Lavenia Hendren Gilreath were presumably moved north of town to the Mountlawn Memorial Park Cemetery (which opened in 1945). There is no record of the transfer, but their grave markers are in place only at Mountlawn, where their children are also buried.]
