  	http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xUB.2ACE/3649 Mr. Charlie Grant Bumgarner, age 96, of Woodland Boulevard, Wilkesboro, a civic leader and life long resident of Wilkes county died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mr. Bumgarner was born October 29, 1907 in Wilkesboro, eleventh child of Linville and Bessie McNeil Bumgarner. He was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church for 82 years where he was the oldest member by age and years of membership. After joining the church July 9, 1922, he served in many capacities including as a deacon. One September 20, 1987 he became Deacon Emeritus. Being a life-long resident of Wilkes County, Charlie Bumgarner served Wilkesboro and Wilkes County well. His first job was with the Wilkes County Good Roads Commission. His long work history included Wilkes Hosiery Mills, first as a Boarding Room Foreman, and then as General Maintenance Supervisor. He was Wilkes County Tax Collector for ten years. During WWII, he served as a non-commissioned army officer for two and one-half years. After the war in 1953, Charlie Bumgarner was elected Mayor of Wilkesboro and served in that capacity for twenty years never losing an election. He became a Mason, December 14, 1935 and was a Master Mason of the Liberty Lodge, Wilkesboro, NC. Much of Charlie Bumgarner's life was spent making Wilkesboro and Wilkes County a better place to live. He served on numerous boards and commissions and was active in civic affairs until his health limited his participation. He was married to Sue Ella Lyon, April 4, 1936. They were married 67 years until her death December 1, 2003. In addition to his wife and parents, his six brothers and seven sisters preceded him in death. Surviving is a son, Charles Ryan Bumgarner and wife Mary of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Janet Sue Dail and husband David of Marietta, GA; and two granddaughters, Dr. Jennifer Dail of Tuscaloosa, AL and Rebecca Dail of Marietta, GA. The funeral service will be held Thursday 11:00 AM, April 1, 2004 at Wilkesboro Baptist Church with the Rev. Alfred E. Andrews, Jr. officiating and Dr. Jennifer Dail delivering the Eulogy. Burial will be in Mountain Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 until 11 prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. Flowers will accepted or memorials may be made to Wilkesboro Baptist Church Building Fund, P O Box 61, Wilkesboro, NC 28697. Pallbearers will be Bill Davis, Jim Gray, Tommy Bumgarner, Jacob Bumgarner, Mike Mizelle, Mike Inscore and honorary pallbearer, Pete Glass. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of North Wilkesboro is in charge of the arrangements.
