Author: Compiled by Miriam Mitchiner Brown

      Media: Book
      Page: 32
Text: Pg-142 May Term 1842 Justices:Merrit Etheridge, Jethro Dean, James Fountain and Sam'l B eall. Clerk: Aug. B. Raiford.
John L. Jones, Est. Taliaferro Jones is appointed Admr., de bonis non, the Will annexed, with $4,000 bond. Henry Eady, Wade Nelson, Wm. G. Hatcher, Wiley Holland and William Stephens are Appraisers.

According to GEORGIA GENEALOGIES, "John Lawrence Jones was evidently born in Virginia, raised in some of the more settled provinces and came from a family of considerable culture. He was highly appreciative of the finer things of life and was to some extent out of joint with the rougher elements with which he came in contact with in his Georgia environment. That he was a man of intelligence and integrity is proven by the fact he was named executor of the will of Dr. John Taliaferro. That he was a man of courage is proven by the fact he took up arms in defense of the people of his community from the depredations of the Indians, serving as a
soldier in the Indian War (Georgia Genealogies author's mother's notes--author
said he was a worthy mate of Lucy Taliaferro)."

1812 - John L. Jones enlists as Private in Wimberly's 3rd Regiment, Georgia Militia in the War of 1812. He later probably served in the Indian Wars of 1815-1817.

John L. and Joseph Jones are listed on page 80 of the 1820 Census Index.

The 1820 Wilkinson County, GA census lists John L. and Lucy Taliaferro (reference to a will of Joseph Taliaferro and his wife where John and Lucy were beneficiaries).

1827 - John L. Jones was Executor of Lewis Bond estate. 1828 - John L. Jones was executor of John Taliaferro estate.

1830 census lists that John L. Jones died in 1831, and Lucy is still living as his widow. John L. Jones' will, prepared January, 1830, was probated on July 5, 1830. It listed Wilkinson County, GA as his home and appointed his wife, Lucy, and his brother Thomas along with William Rutherford to dispose of this property. He gives daughter, Nancy (married Peyton Clay), and Sarah (married Edmund Clay), and Letha (no record) one feather bed and furniture to each of them. He gives each 40 weight and $10.00 worth of kitchen furniture along with 2 cows and calves, one sow, and pigs. The remainder of the estate is left to Lucy for her lifetime or widowhood. The children are to be schooled at Lucy's discretion. Other children named are: Beheathland (married James H. Fountain), Susan (married Robt. Barnes), Judith (married Lewis Clay), and John Richard (married Obedience Hatcher). The Clays were all brothers and sons of David and Eve Hardin Clay. Son Taliaferro Jones ends up with primary responsibility for the small children and estate after his mom and dad's death.
