Obituary |
1969 |
The Post-Searchlight (newspaper)-301 North Crawford Street, Bainbridge, Decatur County, Georgia, USA |
- Final rites, Aug. 9th for C. Ross Rich
Graveside services were held last Saturday morning at ten, Oak City Cemetery, for Charles Ross Rich, 70, who passed away suddenly on August 5th at his residence at 500 E. Evans Street in this city.
The deceased had only recently sold his home on the corner of Potter and Evans Streets, and had moved into an apartment at the above address.
His body was found on August 7th when interested friends notified relatives that he had not been seen for two days. The exact cause of death was not determined.
C. Ross Rich was a member of a pioneer Decatur County family, and had spent his entire life in the city. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Euzema Rich, and was the grandson of the late Elijah Andrew Jackson Rich, a Confederate veteran, and one of the first land owners in the Bethel Community of this county.
Until several years ago the deceased was the owner of Rich Glass Company, but he sold the business to Fred Brownlee, and then retired from active participation. His wife, Orion McLellan Rich, preceded him in death on November 28, 1967.
He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Board of Deacons, and sang in the Church Choir. He was also a member of Orion Lodge No. 8, F. &A.M., and those of the older generation will remember him as a musician in the old Cooter's Owls' Orchestra, which was popular in this area of the country in the 1920's and 30's.
Services were held in Oak City Cemetery with Dr. James T. Burrell, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, and Dr. Charles Bishop, Pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Baraca Class of the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons: Donald E. Rich, Gainesville, Ga., and Charles R. Rich, Jr., Chicago, Ill., and three grandchildren.
He is also survived by three sisters: Mrs. Jewel Kistner, Orlando, Fla., Mrs. Lois Rapp, Pompano Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Gladys Dugan, Redding, Pa., and two brothers, R. L. Rich, Sr., of Bainbridge, and E. G. "Rusty" Rich, of Orlando, Fla.
Cox Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
