News Article |
- "During the Civil War, Franklin supplied more than her quota of the boys who went to the Front and offered to make the supreme sacrifice. Many of them made it, and I have it from a buddy of Mr. Berrigan's (who was the grandfather of Mr. Nestor) and also from Mr. Helms who was his friend, that Berrigan was one of the best soldiers that ever went on a battle field, so you see Bill comes from pretty good stock as far as patriotism is concerned."

Obituary |

The Sussex Independent (newspaper), Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA |
- "The illness of William Berrigan, which we reported last week, proved fatal, and resulted in death, early Monday morning. Mr. Berrigan's death takes from us one of our oldest and most respected citizens and ends the life of one of our country's bravest defenders. He was born in Ireland about seventy years ago but came to this country when quite a young man. When the Rebellion broke out he was one of the first to offer his services to preserve the Union, and his record during the long service, from the beginning to the close of that civil strife, is without blemish. He was an honored member of the G. A. R. and his funeral was under their auspices. He was buried from the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday morning, when a Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. J. J. Cuneely. The church was not large enough to accommodate the many friends who were there to pay the last tribute of respect to this brave old soldier."

Obituary |
8 Mar 1893 |
The Sussex Register (newspaper), Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA [16] |
- William Berrigan, who died at Franklin Furnace on Monday of last week, was a genial old gentleman and a highly esteemed citizen. He was a veteran of the late war and a member of Captain Walker Post G. A. R. having served in Company M, 1st N. J. Cavalry of which Thomas R. Haines was Captain. Comrade Berrigan enlisted October 4, 1861, re-enlisted Jan. 1, 1864 and was honorably discharged July 24, 1865, making a total service of three years nine months and twenty days. He died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Flood. The funeral services on Thursday were attended by a delegation from Captain Walker Post, and were held at the church of the Immaculate Conception. He is survived by a son, Nicholas Berrigan.
At a regular meeting of Edgar Sherman Post, No. 115, G. A. R., Dept. of New Jersey, the following minutes was adopted this 14rg day of March, 1893:
WHEREAS, this Post has been called upon to mourn the loss of one of its most highly respected members, William Berrigan, who after a short illness died Feb. 27th inst., 1893, aged 71 years.
RESOLVED, That in the death of William Berrigan this Post has lost one whose sterling qualities as a man endeared not only to all comrades, but to the community at large, that having accepted this country as his home, he accepted its flag for protection, and as such enlisted with the New Jersey Cavalry, Vol., in the early outbreak of the late rebellion, and continued his services to the government as a soldier until June, 1865, experiencing a term of service, the hardships of which can only be related by the few surviving members of the regiment. We commemorate on this record his honor and courtesy as a comrade, his benevolent impulses, and his steadfast christian example illustrated by a conscientious regard for whatever is honest and pure and of good repute in his relations to all.
RESOLVED, That we tender to his afflicted family our heartfelt sympathies.
RESOLVED, That these resolutions be entered on the Minutes of the Post, and a duly authenticated copy of the same be sent to the county papers and to the family of the deceased.
