"Kinship Ties Tangled When Six Brothers Married Six Sisters
Representative P. D. Rich So Closely Related to Himself That He Can't Figure It All Out.
It's all in the family!
At least that is the way Representative P. D. Rich, of Miller county, looks at it. Also he has reason for his peculiar and unusual point of view, for Representative Rich probably is more closely related to himself than any other member of the general assembly of Georgia, if not any other citizen of this sovereign state.
Eight children were born to the parents of Representative Rich. Of these no less than six married brothers and sisters, members of another prominent family of Miller county.
As a result, these two families have a sort of monopoly on relationship, and Mr. Rich himself admits that the problems of genealogy which frequently confront him are beyond his most ardent efforts at solution.
While steadfastly denying that he is an economist in relations, Mr. Rich considers that he is several times his own brother-in-law, and that his children and those of his various sisters and brothers are double first cousins.
"I'll probably turn out to be my own Aunt Ben by marriage some day," he said. 'Anyway, it's all in the family."
Mr. Rich, despite his problems in kinship, is a hard worker, and already has introduced several measures of importance, which he says will be passed without opposition. One of these is for the establishment of the Australian ballot to operate in county primaries. Another would determine by popular vote whether the people of Colquitt want a city court, and still another would provide a new and more progressive charter for Colquitt, which, Mr. Rich says, has outgrown its present charter." |

Last Rites Held Sunday For Perry David Rich
Funeral services were held last Sunday at the First Baptist Church here for Perry David Rich, Senior, who passed away early Saturday morning at Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 83 years old. Judge Rich, as he was affectionately known to a host of friends, had a wide career of distinguished public service in both Miller and Decatur Counties.
The deceased represented Miller County in the Georgia General Assembly for several terms, serving in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. He served as Solicitor of the City Court of Miller County, and also as Mayor of Colquitt.
Judge Rich established himself in the practice of law in Colquitt as a young man, and then moved to Bainbridge in 1925 to continue his practice. He served two terms as Judge of the City Court of Bainbridge, and became active in the civic, fraternal, business and religious life of this city and county.
Judge Rich was an able lawyer, and was painstaking in the preparation of a case. He had few peers in picking a jury, and his arguments before juries were masterpieces. He spoke in terms jurors could understand, and when it became necessary, he could play upon the emotions leaving few dry eyes in the jury box.
The deceased was a member of a pioneer family of Decatur County. He was the son of the late Elijah Arthur Johnson Rich, a Confederate veteran, and Hattie Pierce Rich. His fraternal grandfather was killed in the fighting around Atlanta, and his father came home from Virginia to re-establish the farm in the Bethel Community in Decatur County. He wrote a book in 1939, "Bud", which graphically describes conditions in Southwest Georgia during the war and the period of Reconstruction.
ACTIVE IN FRATERNAL AND RELIGIOUS WORK
The spiritual atmosphere of his home encouraged Judge Rich as a boy to become a devoted Bible student. He loved to quote Biblical truths, and he was intensely interested in Gospel singing. He served as President of the Decatur County Singing Convention for many years. He was also a Mason and a Shriner.
The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Huron Powell Rich; one son, P. D. Rich, Jr., of Bainbridge; and four daughters, Mrs. G. W. Welch, Panama City, Florida; Mrs. L. A. Windham, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Mrs. Joe Jackson, Fayetteville, Georgia, and Mrs. Allan Ramsay of Bainbridge.
He is also survived by one brother, T. E. Rich, Sr., of Bainbridge, 31 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at four Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. James Burrell officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. David Cripps and the Rev. Virgil Bryant, Jr. Interment was in Oak City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were: T. E. Rich, Jr., Moultrie, W. C. Sims, Jr., Brinson, Emory Hunter, Colquitt, and Earl Rich, T. F. Powell and Lloyd Rich, Jr., of Bainbridge.
