    • "Mrs. Maria Cole Taken By Death
      Mrs. Phoebe Maria Cole, 85, lifelong and highly esteemed resident of the Millers Creek community, died early Saturday. She had been in ill health for the part two years.

      Born July 15, 1864, she was a member of a well-known Wilkes family, being a daughter of the late James and Phoebe Hincher Bumgarner. She was married to Rev. Thomas H. Cole, who preceded her in death.

      Surviving Mrs. Cole is one son, Willard G. Cole, editor of the Whiteville Reporter at Wytheville, and five daughters, Mrs. Clossie Hayes of route one, Wilkesboro, Mrs. Grant Hodges of Warsaw, Ohio, Mrs. Elijah Nichols, Mrs. Smith Rhodes and Mrs. Ed Church, of route one, Wilkesboro.

      Funeral service was held Saturday morning at Oak Grove church. Rev. J. L. A. Bumgarner conducted the last rites."
