*Although the following "oddities" are noted:
      1) only his middle name is listed
      2) he would have been only 18 and not 22 at the time of the census
      3) he is living in Miller County and not Decatur County
I still believe this is the correct census listing. The following thoughts are the basis of my belief:
      1) Miller County is close to Decatur County and is also close to Early County, where, two years after the 1870 census he married Eugenia Angaretta Jones.
      2) There are no other Charles Harrells, or even C. L. Harrells in all of Georgia, using the census index and going page-by-page in the Bainbridge listings.
      3) In south Georgia the census ages are often known to be inaccurate for various reasons. He may have wanted to appear older to get work and he may have wanted to remain anonymous, using his middle name. His older brother, John Duke harrell was a high-profile politician and possessed $10,000 in real estate by the 1870 census. Charles may have just left temporarily to "sow his wild" oats" or as an act of rebellion.

    The Weekly Democrat
    • "Death of a Good Man. It becomes our painful duty this week to chronicle the death, at his home in this city on Monday, morning, at 4:30 o'clock after an illness of two weeks, of Mr. Charlie L. Harrell in the forty-third year of his age - leaving a devoted wife and six children and a large circle of relatives and devoted friends to mourn his untimely death.
Mr. Harrell had for several years been a sufferer from kidney affection, and was probably the primal cause of his death. His final attack came about two weeks ago, in the character of what the physicians call borraturia(?), but this in a few days yielded kindly to treatment and left him entirely free of fever for a week before his death. This was succeeded by the most obstinate complications between the kidneys and stomache which every known remedy failed to reach - and he died in the manner indicated in the full possession of his every faculty - and in the full triumphs of the Christian faith, saying in the final hours, when interrogated, that he had no fears of death and that his way was clear to the abodes of the blest. What a consolation to his loved ones this assurance, while in the full light of eternity, and while the chilly waters of the Jordan of death laved his tired feet! and what an inspiration to those who loved and esteemed him for his many virtues of head and heart to emulate his virtues and to strive to meet him in heaven.
"Charlie Harrell" as he was known and lovingly called by all his acquaintances, was a man of noble attributes which none who knew him well ever failed to know and appreciate - and the better you knew him the greater became your love and esteem for him. Genial as a happy boy, tender as a woman in the finer sensibilities, he was as brave as a lion and as fearless as death when his personal rights or those of his friends were threatened. Noble, and kind hearted as a friend, loving, indulgent and dutiful as a husband and father, faithful and true as a citizen, an officer, a memberof the Church or of a secret society he filled every station as become the true man, and adorned every station he filled - and no higher tribute can be paid to any man; and now that lifes fitful fever is over he sleeps well - and may the Father he loved and feared and the Savior whom he trusted - administer the consolations of grace to the grief stricken widow and children, the aged and sorely bereaved father and the devotedly attached brother and sister and relatives.
The remains were interred from his late residence at 5 o'clock on Monday afternoon - the last sad rites being performed with very beautiful and impressive Masonic honors, the lodge of which he was an universally honored and greatly beloved member having charge of the obsequies and one of the largest processions we ever saw in Bainbridge following the remains to their last resting place in the city cemetery.
In the death of this gentleman Georgia, Decatur County, the city of Bainbridge, our community have each sustained a serious loss - one we will all realize as we look about us for one to take his place.
      Peace to his sacred dust!"
