- Letter 137, page 175, 19 October 1863: "AG to Maj W. W. Vannoy, 68th Batt HG, Wilkesboro. Col Land comdg the 93d Reg NCM sent a roll of a HG company to this office with the officers reported as elected: Capt Pickens Carlton, 1 Lt Calvin Carlton, 2 Lt Thos W. McNiell, 2 Lt Nathaniel Russell.
"'It appears...he has organised the Home Guard in his regiment and formed three companies. There may be no objection to the reorganization perhaps bu[t] the commissions for the above named reorganization but the commissions for the above named officers unless they choose to surrender them in favor of this new organization.' 2 Lt C. Carlton in Co B must the [sic] the above-named 1 Lt Carlton. 'If so Col Land has no right to take from him a commission issued by the Gov. If he is satisfied with the 2nd Lt's appointment let him retain the commission of 1st Lt.' Enclosed are the roll; return them when properly arranged."

Carter's commission is not sent.' William Edwards became QM 14 Dec 63."
