    Notes
    • "In Limerick, Ireland, a blustery and thundering Sunday took a turn for the worse as a tornado cut a 150-foot swath through the city with winds estimated at 115 mph. Because the city took a direct hit, the damage was significant particularly in the market areas that were thankfully not busy because it was Sunday and the weather was so inclement." Patrick Nestor Sr. came from County Limerick, Ireland all the way to the United States only to have life cut short by typhoid-pneumonia. This was researched by his great grand-son, Dr. John Oliver Nestor. The family had started out in Vermont, where Patrick was a quarryman. Patrick Jr. and Ellen Nestor were both born there, but the family did not stay long. Some time before 1865 they migrated south to Sussex County, New Jersey, where Patrick Sr. and his oldest daughter, Hanora, died. I have not yet found the family in the 1860 census to determine where they lived at that time. There were a few Patrick Nestors listed in Vermont, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, but none seem to be a match for this family.

Patrick's wife preceded him in death (although I do not know the date or place of her death). His older daughter, Nora, also died in 1870, the same year as he did, probably of the same cause. Patrick Sr's younger daughter, Ellen lived until 1906 and stayed with a couple different families, but died before she was married. That left Patrick Jr. as the sole survior who carried on the line. An orphan at 13, Patrick was taken in by the family of Thomas Nestor, likely a brother or other close relative of his father. Thomas had a son, Thomas Jr., the same age as Patrick.

Some time after Patrick Jr. grew up, he erected tombstones for his father and sisters in Sussex County, New Jersey. Patrick Sr's tombstone reads, "Patrick Nestor 1813-1870 ("Erected by his son")." Upon my request, the New Jersey State Archives searched for a death record for Patrick Nestor Sr. from 1867-1878, but did not find one.
