    • "In Memory Of Mrs. Linville Bumgarner: When Mrs. Bessie Ryan McNeill Bumgarner answered the final roll call on November 27, 1938, one of the noblest women our country ever produced passed from us. She was the daughter of Thomas Winslow McNeill and wife Martha Jane McNeill. Mrs. Bumgarner had many brothers and sisters all of whom have passed away except Mrs. O. F. Eller.
Mrs. Bumgarner was the mother of fourteen children, two of whom died in infancy, but six boys and six girls - all over 21 years of age - still survive as does her husband, Mr. Linville Bumgarner. The children have scattered over the country far and wide. Mrs. R. O. Poplin, Elkin N. C., Plato S.. Bumgarner, Rahway, N. J., Pearl Bumgarner, High Point, N. C., Edgar E. Bumgarner, Winston-Salem, N. C., Romulus L. Bumgarner, Goodsprings, Tenn., Mrs. C. M. Hart, Chattanooga, Tenn., Mrs. J. V. Jennings, Petersburg, Va., Mrs. J. B. Gilreath, North Wilkesboro, N. C., Tyre Bumgarner, Wilkesboro, N. C., Charles G. Bumgarner, Wilkesboro, N. C., Mrs. W. H. Riley, Raleigh, N.C., and Jas. Thomas Bumgarner, Wilkesboro, N.C.
Mrs. Bumgarner had many admirable qualities worth emulating, but I shall mention only her qualities as a Christian, neighbor, wife and mother. While not educated in the higher schools of learning, she did possess that which is infinitely more important - a firm and unfaltering faith in God and she placed her trust in Jesus Christ and laid up for herself treasures in Heaven where neither moth nor rust can corrupt nor thieves break through and steal and time cannot destroy.
As a neighbor, she loved her neighbors and yearned for their love in return. She divided with those in need, visited the sick and alleviated as far as she could the burdens of every one. She was inoffensive and jovial.
She was a faithful, loyal and industrious wife. Her household cares were heavy, her responsibilites great, but without murmuring she did her house work and looked after the home while her husband worked the farm and attended his other duties. He served as Clerk of the Superior Court of Wilkes County four years and served terms in the State Senate and Legislature. In every situation, in prosperity and adversity, in victory and in defeat, she was a power of strength, faithful and true to him. Busy with household cares she devoted her entire life to the love and care of her children. As Paul would say, she fought the fight, kept the faith, and won the crown of victory.
She leaves twelve living children as a tribute to her motherhood, and she loved them with a devotion that words cannot paint. All that she had, all that she was, she gave fully and freely to them, and they in turn made her happy. She rejoiced to see that each of them enjoyed a prospect of life less difficult than had been hers, and she justly felt that she had done her part; that each of them was able now to make a living and to do well in this life. Her name will be perpetuated through them. After all, this is a woman's greatest contribution to her country and her God. Well did the poet write:

'No painter's brush or poet's pen
      In justice to her fame,
Has ever reached half high enough
      To write a Mother's name.

Make ink of tears and golden gems
      And sunbeams wreathed together,
With golden pen and holy hand
Go write the name of Mother.

Then upward to that great White Throne,
      With music soft and sweet,
Thank God for that precious name
And write it at His feet.'

      Johnson J. Hayes"

    • "Mrs. L. Bumgarner Is Taken by Death; Died Sunday Evening at Her Home In Wilkesboro; Funeral Tuesday:
Mrs. Bessie Bumgarner, wife of Linville Bumgarner, of Wilkesboro, died at her home Sunday evening, six o'clock, following a week's critical illness. She had been in ill heath for the past year.

Had she lived until January, she and her husband, former state senator and now clerk of the federal court at Wilkesboro, would have observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

J.; Miss Pearl Bumgarner, member of the High Point school faculty; Edd E. Bumgarner, assistant to the superintendant of manufacturing at Reynolds Tobacco company, Winston-Salem; R. L.
