    Gender  Male
    Alt. Birth
    • There are several different birth years listed for James, noted at various times during his life and afterwards. Two sources found so far prove an exact date of 4 April 1874. They include his 1899 naturalization papers and his 1918 World War I Draft Registration card.

On the ship list for his immigration in 1891, he was listed as age 19 (born abt 1872). At his marriage in 1899, he was listed as age 26 (born abt 1873). In the 1910 census, he was listed as age 37 (born abt 1873). By the 1920 census, he was listed as age 44 (born abt 1876), and by 1930, he was listed as age 56 (born abt 1874). However, the names and ages of the family members in the census seem to be consistent from year to year. His death certificate says he died in 1950 at age 69, indicating they he was born about 1881. This is possibly a typo (10 years off) because his obituary, published the same year, says that he was 79 years old at death, corresponding to a birth year of about 1871.

    • This date and place are from his son's birth certificate. However, he has not been located in the 1900 census. It is possible that during the time of the census he was traveling back to Ireland to take his motherless son to live with relatives. This is only a theory at this point.
