Biographical sketch  from "The Heritage of Wilkes County, Volume II," page 392, article 624 by Virginia Parleir Handy
    • "Jonathan Parleir, believed to be the second son of Isaac Parlier, was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina, ca. 1783. In 1811, Jonathan married Rebecca Shin. During their life together, they lived in the Brushy Mountains in a section known as Pore's Knob. Jonathan and Rebecca were the parents of eleven children: Jacob, Sarah, William R., Noah B., Jonathan W., John F., James W., George Wesley, Rebecca E., Elbert A., and Nancy C.

A story handed down through several generations says Jonathan would sit on the front porch of their house in the late afternoon and look at the pretty field across the road. He often told family members that when he died, he wanted to be buried under the large tree in the center of that field.

When Jonathan died on 21 July 1845, his request was honored as his family buried him in the spot that he had selected. That was the beginning of the Parleir Cemetery.

Through the years, many other family members have been buried with Jonathan in the family cemetery. Beside him rests his wife, Rebecca, who died 27 April 1872. Today, there are thirty-one recognizable grave sites, fifteen of which are marked with fieldstones.

Confederate grave stones mark the graves of Jonathan's sons, George Wesley and James W., and a grandson, George R. Gilreath, who died in the Civil War. Confederate memorial stones have been erected to a son, Elbert A., and a grandson, Leonard L. Parleir, who were killed in action.

Memorial stones have been erected for two sons, William R. and Jonathan W. Parleir, whose exact grave sites are unknown.

While Jonathan and Rebecca lived, their property consisted of approximately two hundred acres around their homeplace. Much of this land has been sold over the more than one hundred years since their deaths. However, the parcel of land containing the family cemetery and the old homesite remains in the family and is owned by Hubert Hawn of Moravian Falls, a great-grandson of Jonathan Parleir.

Today, Jonathan, Rebecca, five sons, three daughters-in-law, and many grandchildren are at rest on this pretty hillside in Wilkes County.
