Sarah A. "Sallie" Jones[1, 2, 3, 4]

Female Abt 1814 - 1859

Personal Information    |    Media    |    Sources    |    Event Map    |    All

  • Alt. Birth  15 Sep 1808
    • This alternate birth date has been listed by some on the internet, but I have found no support for this date other than the fact that Edmund Clay was married to a 30-40 year old female in the 1840 U.S. Census (see timeline below).

1820: Wilkinson Co. census - a female <10 is listed. This could be Sarah at about 5.

1830: Wilkinson Co. census - Sarah's father, John L. Jones died on 1 Mar 1830. It is likely that the census was taken after his death. There is a listing for a Lucy Jones, John L. Jones' widow, in the 1830 census. However, the the oldest female is 30-40 while Lucy was 50 at the time. Also, the other children's ages do not fit nicely into the census listing. There are, however, two females age 10-15 listed. One of them could be Sarah at age 15. There is not a 5-10 year old female in the household (to support a birthdate for Sarah of 1808).

1831: Wilkinson Co. marriages - lists an Edmund Clay marrying a "Sallie" Jones. If she had been born in 1814, she would have been about 17 at the time of marriage. A birth year of 1808 would have put her at 23. Either scenario is possible.

1840: Wilkinson County census - Edmund Clay is listed as 30-40 with a female 30-40 in the household. Is this Sarah/Sallie? The date range supports a birth year of 1808 (age 32) and not a birth year of about 1814 (age 26).

1840-1845: some time in this range, Edmond and his family moved from Wilkinson County to Lee County. Deeds are needed to pinpoint the date more closely.

1845: Edmund supposedly died about this year in Lee County, part of which later became Terrell County in 1856. His estate was dispensed in both counties.

1850: Lee County census: A 35 year old Sarah A. Clay is listed (supporting the 1814 birth year estimate) with three children.

1860: Terrell County death index shows a 45 year old widowed Sarah Clay dying in Oct 1859 (supporting the 1814 birth year estimate).

However, the county courthouse burned in 1854, and this record was destroyed. The Wilkinson County courthouse confirms that the marriage records are missing from 1828-1865.
