      who was a private in the regiment commanded by
      Col. S. Webb, of the Connecticut
      line, for the term of 5 years.

      Inscribed on the roll of Pennsylvania
      at the rate of eight Dollars per month, to commence on
      the 23. of April, 1818

      Certificate of Pension issued the 24. of March '19
      and sent to Jesse Fell, Judge,
      Wilkesbarre, Luzerne Co. Penn.

      On this twenty third day of April A.D. - 1818 before me the subscriber, President Judge of the Eleventh Judicial district in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, personally appears Stephen Roberts - aged fifty Eight years & five months, resident in Union in the said county of Luzerne - in the state aforesaid, who being by me first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress, entitled, "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War." That the said Stephen Roberts enlisted in Middletown in the state of Connecticut in the Spring of 1778. in the company commanded by Captain Williams - Con: Saml Webb regt of the Connecticut line
      that he continued to serve in the said corps and in the service of the United States, until the ninth day of June 1783 when he was discharged from service in West Point state of New York that he was in the battles of Spring field in the engagement in Rhode Island where the French State came in and at Kingsbridge in a skirmish with Delancey horn - he gave his discharge shortly after the war to one Thomas Stanley now decd who bought his land
      And that he is in reduced circumstances, and stands in need of the Assistance of His Country for support-and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services Stephen Roberts

      And on the 8th day of May AD 1818 before the subscriber appeared Jonathan Stevens Esqr who being duly sworn did depose & declare that he well knew Stephen Roberts the above applicant in the company of Capt. Williams & Regt of Col. Webb of the Connecticut line & that they served together for three years in that company and that the said Roberts was for much time a corporal in the same -

      On this second day of April Anno Domini one thousand eight hundred & twenty onepersonally appeared in open court it being a Court of Record (to wit) the Court of Common Pleas in and for the said County of Luzerne & state aforesaid Stephen Roberts aged about sixty one years resident in the Township of Union & the County & State aforesaid who first being sworn according to Law doth on his oath declare and say that he served in the revolutionary war in Capt. Walkers company Col Welles Regiment of Connecticut troops & also in Capt. Williams company same Regiment for the space of six years as more particularly stated in his original declaration dated the 23rd day of April one thousand eight hundred & eighteen certificate No. 9345-
      And I do solomnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 & that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any other manner disposed of property or any part thereof with intent thereby as to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of the Act of Congress entitled An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States on the revolutionary war passed on the 18th day of March 1818. and that I have not nor has any person or persons in trust for me any property securities or contracts or debts due to me- nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed & by me subscribed - Stephen Roberts

    • "About 1810, Stephen Roberts, accompanied by his wife and two children, removed from Connecticut to Plymouth, where he remained a few years, then removed to Union township, where he purchased seventy-five acres of unimproved land, most of which was under cultivation at this death. He was a man of marked influence in society, a leading spirit in politics and in religion, and held all the responsible offices in the town. He was seventy-five years old at the time of his death. He reared a family of eight children."
