Harrell      April Term 1857.            & John Harrell      WHEREAS, at the Ooctober Term of this Court, last past, a Rule Ni Si was granted in the above case, requiring the Defendant to pay to the Plaintiff the pricipal, interest and cost, due on a certain note given by the Defendants on the first day of October 1855 and to become due on the first day of October 1856 for the sum of Three thousand Dollars for the better securing the payment of which said note, said Defendants had executed on the Second day of October 1855 to the Plaintiff these Deed of Mortgage, conveying to said Plaintiff that certain piece of town property lying & being in the town of Bainbridge in said County & known in the plan of said town as town lots number nine (9) no. 10 no. 11 & number 12 being the place known as the town lot on which situate the Hotel known as the Harrell Hotel together with all of said lots situate & lying in the garden lots, stable lots & other lots to the said William W. & John attached & belonging thereto the number of acres not known with all the rights & appurtenances to the said tavern lot in any waise appurtaining and belonging. Conditioned to be void upon the payment of the principal and interest of said note: And it appearing to the Court that a copies of said Rule Ni Si has been served on the Defendents William W. & John Harrell and that said defendants still neglect and refuse to pay the amount due on said note.   	-Eastman Times: On Sunday night last between 11 and 12 o'clock, the fine residence of Mr. W. W. Harrell, on his river plantation was entirely consumed by fire.  The flames were making such headway before it was discovered as to render it absolutely impossible to do anything towards saving the building.  The gentleman whom Mr. Harrell has living there was absent, spending the night with one of his neighbors, and the fire was first discovered by Mrs. Fore[?], who lives near there, and who gave the alarm.  The house was comparatively new, having been built in 1871 at a cost of about $7,300.  It was a large two-story wooden building, all nicely plastered inside, and was considered one of the nicest and most comfortable houses in this section.  Fortunately, Mr. H. had all his furniture here in town where he is living, so he lost nothing but his dwelling in this [?]ance, which, however, was quite heavy, especially when supplemented by the $3,000 loss so recently sustained by the burning of his stables, horses, etc.  His dwelling was secured in two companies for $1,500 in each, making $3,000 insurance.  Another policy in at $1,500 in a third company had expired only a few weeks before the burning.  Mr. Harrell is thoroughly satisfied that this is the work of an incendiary.  The loss in this instance is estimated at $4,000 over and above insurance.

  	Bainbridge Matters: Bainbridge, August 14.--R. R. Blocker, of the Early County News, paid us a social visit to-day.  He is looking gigantically healthy. Cotton is opening rapidly.  Mr. Jacob Harrell brought in the first bale of the season Monday.  It was classed as middle g. weighed 565 pounds, and was sold to J. D. Harrell & Bro. for eleven cents.  Mr. Harrell brought in two bales and Mr. John E. Donalson one this week. Drs. Hall Morrison, of Decatur county, and W. J. Hadden, of New Jersey, in connection with a Major Harris, have entered into a contract with the United States to furnish 25,000 feet of square pine timber from Morrison & Haddon's lands in this county.  The timber is to be delivered at Apalachicola within two months from now for shipment.  Your correspondent is invited to a seat on the first raft.  Has accepted and expects a jolly ride to the sea. Hon. W. W. Harrell is at home on a short leave of absence, cultivating the acquaintance of his friends and family.

  	"WILLIAM HARRELL CROSSES DIVIDE. Was oldest Mason in Georgia and First Native of Decatur County. Bainbridge, Ga,. January 14. -(Special.)-William W. Harrell died this morning of paralysis after a short illness.  He lived all his life here, being the first white child born to parents residing in the county.  He was 90 years old, having enjoyed splended health till shortly before his death.  He owned the first hotel built at Bainbridge, ran a stage line from Cuthbert to Tallahassee, was a conferate veteran, serving in the First Georgia infantry, was sheriff twenty years and a member of the legislature during reconstruction days.  He had been a Mason sixty-nine years, being the oldest Mason in Georgia. Mr. Harrell is survived by one daughter, Mrs. H. D. Wilson; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and several hundred other relatives in Decatur county.  Mr. Harrell was a prominent citizen, a consecrated Christian and was generally beloved.  The funeral occurred this afternoon from the residence of his daughter, Rev. Walter Anthony officiating.  The services at the cemetery were conducted by the Masons."

  Note from compiler:  I am trying to track down the family Bible for William Washington Harrell to see who currently has it.  I would love to get a copy of the original to check again a few discrepancies between it and other records (see the marriage information for William and Mary).  If you know where I can find this Bible, please let me know. Notes from "Decatur County Past and Present 1823-1991," page 37 by Oscar Jackson: "Bainbridge had at various times in its early life five opera houses, two theatres, a horse racing track and at the same time 10-12 saloons.  Since passengers from the steam boats, train terminal and stage coach lines spent the night in Bainbridge, numerous hotels were constructed...The third hotel was William W. Harrell's Hotel built by William Washington Harrell.  Mr. Harrell was born near Climax in a covered wagon in 1822 and was the first white child born in Decatur County.  His hotel later became the Decatur House and in 1859 street lights were placed in front of it." page 234 by Jane (Harrell) Lambert: "Jacob Harrell, veteran of the Revolutionary War, moved from NC to Pulaski Co., GA, then on to Decatur Co. in 1821, to settle 11 miles southeast of Bainbridge, then a mere trading post known as Fort Hughes. His s, W.W. Harrell (b 1822, d 1897) had Indians as playmates, was a planter, miller, hotel owner, stagecoach line owner, in the livery business, sheriff of Decatur Co., Civil War veteran, and member of the Georgia House of Representatives." Notes from "Memoirs of Georgia" pages 588-589: "W. W. Harrell enjoys the unique distinction of being the oldest native-born citizen of Decatur County-having been born Oct. 17, 1822, at a point eleven miles southeast of Bainbridge, then a mere trading post known as Fort Hughes, so named in commemoration of the killing there, by the Indians, of a fifer named Hughes.  The name Harrell is indelibly written on every page of the annals of Decatur county.  Energetic, enterprising, aggressive, the members of the family have so impressed their personality on the county that no history would be complete without honorable mention of the name.  Business ability being the prominent characteristic of the family, solid facts, concisely and pointedly presented, will form the staple of this sketch.  Jacob Harrell, grandfather of W. W. Harrell, came from North Carolina in the latter part of the last century and settled in Pulaski county, Ga., but in 1821, with his wife, moved to Decatur county and settled eleven miles southeast of Bainbridge.  The original plantation is now in possession of W. W. Harrell.  The parents of W. W. Harrell, John and Sarah (Brock) Harrell, had been married just before the removal to Decatur county.  Five children were born to them:  W. W., the eldest; Mary, widow of James Bird; John; Martha, widow of James Thomas; and Jacob, all now living in Decatur county.  The father of this family was a shrewd and industrious planter, who, though poor in his youth, accumulated before middle age one of the finest properties in the county.  At the close of the late war he released 250 negroes.  He died in 1876, when seventy-five years and some months old; his wife died some years before.  Mr. Harrell grew to manhood in a pioneer country, subject to all the disadvantages and hardships of the time and locality.  Education was obtained almost on the "catch-as-catch-can" principle-that is, by attending school only two or three months in the year.  He managed, however, to attain such proficiency in knowledge of the "three R's," as, supplemented by his inborn shrewdness and business tact, has enabled him to successfully compete, in the struggle of life, with others whose early advantages were superior to his.  Beginning as a planter near the old homestead, he, after an experience of eight years, bought the hotel property at Bainbridge, and served as "mine host" of the Decatur house for a number of years, operating in connection with it a livery business.  Retiring from the hotel in 1859, he engaged in a number of enterprises-merchandising, running a stage line, keeping a livery stable, etc.  In 1857 Mr. Harrell was elected sheriff of the county, serving in that capacity and as deputy until the war began, when he volunteered as a private in the First Georgia infantry, and served at Pensacola, Fla., and in West Virginia, until compelled to retire on a certificate of disability.  His service, though brief, was none the less arduous and honorable.  While absent he had been elected sheriff, in which office he served continuously until 1877, with the exception of a few months in 1872.  A republican had been elected that year, but resigned, when Mr. Harrell was again elected.  In 1877 he was elected to the house of representatives-rendering efficient and valuable service, and afterward retiring to private life.  Since the war he has bestowed much attention to planting and milling; and, although past three score and ten is active and vigorous, and operates two mills and several plantations, aggregating 2,300 acres.  Col. Harrell was married June 29, 1843, to Ann B. Bird.  To them six children have been born: John D., merchant, Bainbridge; Martha Isabella; W. J., doctor; a little boy, not named (deceased); Charles L., merchant, in company with John D., and Clifford, Mrs. W. D. Wilson, Bainbridge.  Mrs. Harrell died July 28, 1882.  Col. Harrell ranks as one of the staunchest of democrats, is a thorough-going Methodist, and as a Mason has been exalted to the royal arch degree."
