from Kingstown (now Dun Laoghaire), Ireland
    • On 31 May 1928, shortly after her mother's death, Agnes Long obtained a passport and left her home town of Dun Laoghaire (also known back then as Kingstown), Co. Dublin, Ireland. She set sail for the United States on a ship called the Adriatic.

The Adriatic was built in 1907 by Harlan & Wolfe, Limited, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It weighed 24,541 gross tons, and was 726 (bp) feet long and 75 feet wide. The ship possessed steam quadruple expansion engines, with a twin screw and could hold 2,825 passengers (425 first class, 500 second class, 1,900 third class). Service speed was 17 knots.

The Adriatic was built for White Star and Dominion Lines and offered Liverpool to New York service. It was broken up in Japan in 1935.

The following facts are based on her listing on the ship's manifest: "List 3: S.S. Adriatic, Passengers sailing from Liverpool, August 18, 1928 and arriving at the port of New York on August 27, 1928."

Agnes Long was listed as a single female age 27, a bookkeeper, and was able to read, write, and speak English. She was a citizen of the Irish Free State, born in Kingstown, Ireland Her immigration visa number was 13417, and was issued at Dublin on 20 July 1928. Her last permanent address was Kingstown, Ireland

Her nearest relative was her father, Mr. R. Long of 11 Convent Road, Kingstown, Dublin, Ireland. Her final destination was New York, NY and her passage was paid for by her brother, Mr. T. Long of 3410 Kingsbridge Ave., New York, NY. This was her first visit to the United States and she was in possession of at least $50 at the time of her arrival.

Although she was uncertain of her time of stay, she indicated that she did intend to become an American citizen. At 5 feet, 3 inches, her health was listed as good. She had a "fresh" complexion, brown hair, and gray eyes, and had no other identifying marks.

Upon disembarking, Agnes met up with her brother Terry and her sister Frances who had come to the United States earlier. Agnes spent the rest of her life in Bronx, New York, where she met and married Jerry Murphy.
